Braille Information and Resources

In the Fall of 2014, the state of Ohio developed a four year plan to follow the adoption of Unified English Braille (UEB) by the Braille Authority of North America (BANA), while maintaining Nemeth Code for Mathematics and Science, the Music Braille Code, and The IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) Code.

In the process of determining if a child has a visual impairment, Sec. 614(d)(3)(B)(iii) of IDEA requires the IEP Team to provide braille instruction unless the IEP Team determines, after an evaluation of the child's reading and writing skills, needs, and appropriate reading and writing media (including an evaluation of the child's future needs for instruction in braille or the use of braille), that instruction in braille or the use of braille is not appropriate for the child. If the determination has been made that a child will be given braille instruction, the resources below can facilitate Learning, Obtaining, Teaching, and Supporting braille.
